Art Conservation and You:

The Importance of Care for Your Objects

This presentation covers general conservation topics, history, ethics, and at-home preventive care for the general public.

As a participant in the Delaware Public Humanities Institute (DelPHI), I created and gave a talk to students from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) on professional and personal implementations of conservation.

Technical Analysis Walk Through

The technical examination of Madonna and Child is explored in depth on this website. It is used as an example to explain various technical analyses and scientific equipment sometimes used in art conservation and technical art history. The scientific techniques are defined in straight-forward, accessible language.

Herbert Hoover High School Project/Curriculum Development

During my summer at Balboa Art Conservation Center (BACC), I was able to participate in a collaboration between the conservators at BACC and teachers at Hoover High. At Hoover High, students are grouped into different academies or cohorts that focus on year-long project which intersects with classroom curriculum. BACC worked with the Sustainable Academy of Building & Engineering (SABE) program to develop curriculum around the conservation and preservation needs of the school’s WPA era Donal Hord sculpture, which was housed in the library. Overarching themes such as sustainability, different value systems, display options, and various chemistry concepts were explored as bridges between the academic classes and conservation. I produced two digital handouts which were organized by overarching themes, with a paragraph explaining the link between each theme and conservation, and links to relevant readings and publications. All the reading resources were then compiled into a digital library which was made accessible to the participating teachers.

The work of compiling a digital library continued during my second year and was expanded into a google drive that housed a large set of resources and annotated bibliographies for teachers and BACC as they continued their work with local San Diego schools. For more information view the project report on the google drive education toolkit.

Backing Board Informational Pamphlet

As part of my preventive minor work, I researched and compiled resources on various backing board materials, instillation, and their performance as preventive practices. This research was organized into an annotated bibliography. However, I wanted this research to be more accessible to a non-academic and/or non-conservation audience. With that in mind I created a trifold pamphlet to convey the most practical information to framers, art students, smaller institutions and art collectors. Paired with the information, there are custom illustrations.

Lab Tours

Whenever possible, I participate in educational tours that speak to many audiences. This includes tours given at both Winterthur and Balboa Art Conservation Center. I speak on both the projects I am actively working on and also conservation as a concept and profession.

Conservation Clinic at Winterthur

Clinic Session

PC: Dr. Joyce Hill Stoner

Conservation clinic is an event that takes place six times a year at Winterthur. The public is welcome to sign up for a 30 minute free consultation about an artwork they bring in. Discussed are condition issues and how they may have come about. Attainable preventive measure are discussed and if needed, a list of private conservators in the area can be given.
